School is ALMOST out!
I can't believe the year went by so quickly, yet, this is the longest week of my life. I'm so grateful to finally be out of the Dade County School system with its ridiculous rules.
Not much has happened lately, but I did shoot today. Nothing major, since the sun was really harsh.
What I Wore

Vintage Leaf Top, F21 Black skirt, AA headband, Limited Tights, not pictured: Black Chinese Laundry Patent Wedges
I also got some new clothes! They came in the mail today from Forever 21. It's mostly clothes for when I go up to college in the Fall. I'll try to post pictures another time.
I gotta run- I have to finish my art final TONIGHT and I'm only 1/3rd of the way done! Procrastination is my worst enemy!

I need to get myself back together.
Hey everyone!
Just a quick sketch post. I'm trying to get myself back together. I'm just SO turned off of school right now. I have a project due in 2 days that I haven't even started. It's nothing hard, to be honest with you. I just have to gather 10 books I've read and get some information on them. And I also have practically my entire AP portfolio to do. My breadth portion is done, but I'm about half through with my concentration with a couple weeks to go. Also, my gov teacher hasn't finished teaching the course that was supposed to be done MONTHS ago, and I'm missing out on economics, which I may have needed for, well, the rest of my life. Aahhhhhh, this year sucks. But I got into Kansas City Art Institute with a $60,000 scholarship, so that's pretty big. I find out about RISD this week, I'm excited!
ANYWAY, on to the sketch!

I don't know what's up with the pose, or the off proportions, but I'm still satisfied with it as far as color is concerned. I like the layers in the face and the form of the hair particularly.
Thassit!
xo

You would've been over this by now.
Hey!
I told you I was going to update again soon :)
I'm so excited, I've got some big newssss.
First and foremost, I went to Senior Breakfast on Thursday the 11th.
AND, this is
What I Wore

Free People Dress, sheer tights, F21 Floral Pumps/Locket/Purse.

So how about I'm the biggest klutz ever and I managed to get a run in my tights RIGHT before we boarded the buses to the banquet hall? Haha. Anyway, I've had this dress since November or so and I finally got to wear it. I got it on super sale from Macy's, considering Free People usually costs and arm and a leg and a half. I love the lace details and the shoulder keyholes so much :)
Senior Breakfast consisted of a cheap, powdered egg breakfast. (There was also french toast and sausage, they we're okay.) Then we voted for superlatives, and I found my name on the ballot and I was really happy! We had a Hypnotist show which ended up being completely hilarious. The hypnotist said that when the people on stage would wake up, they would look down and not see their belly button. They woke up, and all of them started freaking out. This one girl had even start crying! Anyway, from there we had a slideshow, and then we danced. I'm not exactly sure how they got us all to dance at around 12pm. Way too early. Then, at around 1:00, they started announcing superlatives, and I was voted Most Unique Style! I was so excited, but didn't really want to get my hopes up. But I got it!
As for today, this is
What I Wore

F21 Leopard bodysuit / green purse, BDG Hi-Waisted Cigarette Jeans, Rampage Black Oxford Heels, Vintage Belt.

Today was a bit simple. I was going to wear a green skirt, but I changed my mind since the skirt needed to be ironed and for some reason, we keep the iron in my parents' room where someone is always sleeping (my mom is a nurse that works nights, therefore, sleeps during the day; my dad is normal and works days/ sleeps nights). So, to avoid the conflict of waking someone up and making them unhappy, I just went with my usual black jeans. These things fit like a dream. I love them so much.
SO. I arrived home, checked the mail, and I got accepted into Maryland Institute College of Art! I'm so excited! :) I quickly sent of my scholarship material right after. Haha, you have no idea how good I feel right now. I'm so excited to grow with my art!
Anyway, I need to catch up on sleep and work. I went to bed late last night, especially since my boyfriend kept me up on the phone (no complaints about that one though!)
So, I'm gone!
I want to start updating this regularly again. It's my plan!

Teasing to Please
Ahhh, it's been a couple months. Think are finally starting to wind down this school year. I'm so grateful that senior year is almost over. Today has been such a good day! FCAT testing is going on throughout Florida, and Juniors and Seniors aren't required to take the test if they already passed it Sophomore year, so basically my whole school was chilling both today and yesterday. We had the "Academy Games" yesterday, which was basically all the academies at my school going against each other. And then today, there were giving a pointless presentation on like, cyber-bullying and sexting or something. SO, I had an orthodontist and took my leave at around 9:00am.
What I Wore
Leaving school so early allowed time for me to take photos! Just a couple quick ones in my room. Haha, I love the clean look of white and black, so that's all my room is :) Sorry for boring walls!

F21 Floral blouse, shorts, and belt; AA cardigan and lacy bra; Brown Rampage Oxford Heels; old sheer tights; vintage brooch.
Just an outfit I threw together. I'm taking advantage of the 75-80 degree weather here in Miami. I'm not exactly used to the 60s and below, so this Winter was an interesting one. I was contained to jeans most the time, as well as the rest of my limited Winter wardrobe.

The rest of this year is going to go by so quickly! Yesterday, I brought my tickets for Grad Bash, which, for some reason we have to dress nicely to go to Universal Studios... okay, right. And then tomorrow is my senior breakfast! I have a really cute dress that I've had for months and have never worn before. I hope I get a bunch of pictures. Knowing me, I won't, but I'll TRY.
And I found out yesterday that for the preliminary votes for superlatives, I got around 80 votes for Most Unique Style. Which wow'd me. A lot. We ended up having to redo preliminaries yesterday because the counters were wrongfully filling their names into the blanks. I don't know, people can be stupid. When we were redoing them, I had people come up to me and ask, "...What's your name?" And I was like, "Melanie? ...Are you voting for me?" And they were like, "Yes! For Most Unique Style!" People I didn't even know! Haha.
As far as art school is concerned, so far I have gotten into Kansas City Art Institute and School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I'm waiting on Maryland Institute College of Art (which comes in tomorrow, I think!), Ringling College of Art and Design, and Rhode Island School of Design. I'm so excited, haha. I have to make my decision based on scholarship availability before my actual preference, which is no big deal. I applied to all of these schools because I liked them, after all.
Anywaaaay, I'm out for now :) I plan on posting again within a couple of weeks or so.

didn't I know you?
Hey everyone! Happy New Year!
So, just letting you guys know, I've started Project 365, which can be viewed on myTumblr. If you don't want to search through my Tumblr, it's available here!
Anyway, my Winter Break was really good. I didn't do much, but it put me in a great mood. I didn't want to go back to school, but, well I only have 6 months and 4 days left, anyway. YESSSS.
This is what I wore yesterday: (I whipped out the fabric bolt again.)

F21 Striped Shirt, Bullhead skinny jeans, Steve Madden Mary Jane Pumps, F21 locket.
It was pretty chilly, and I thought that would be sufficient but AH-HAHA. I was wrong.
Today, was pretty good. I woke up in a pleasant mood, mainly since I finished Hamlet (I thought I wouldn't). I get to class, and I'm 1 out of 5 who actually read it over the break. The teacher stepped out for a bit, and in under 45 seconds, I briefed the whole class on the book, so the discussion we had was made up of everything that I told them.
In art, I drew a bike. I did a couple studies, and then started drawing it out. I'm hoping to finish tomorrow. It's part of my drawings for my RISD portfolio and the breadth portion of my AP Portfolio.
Today, I wore this:

Vintage Striped Sweater, AA Tunic (under)/Leggings, F21 Boots/earrings.
I felt so crusty in this, but I've been dying to wear it. It's SO heavy. I pulled it from my mom's closet. It's SO old. Lol.
& gah, my photo style is SO inconsistent. I don't know if I love or hate that.
Anyway, I'm gonna start a painting, so I'm out.
xo

spinning lights, don't be scared
It's Winter Break :D I've need a break from school SO badly. I have about 5 months left and I'm so excited. I can't wait to get out of Miami. The climate even as far North as Gainesville or Orlando would be awesome. At the same time, I love how it was 63 degrees today and I was out in shorts and a t-shirt. And my new vest in which I ripped the button off of (...it's a bad habit.)
I have this new idea for drawings that I can't wait to start. I've been doing some research because I've realized that I work better when something has to, well, conform to some sort of standard. The idea revolves around endangered animals and I guess some sort of anthropomorphism, but not to the full extent- just giving humans animal-like features. I'm starting off with the Iberian Lynx. I'm hoping to do TWO this week, and then show my art teacher and see if it's a good direction for my AP Portfolio. (My last idea just WASN'T working :\)
I almost forgot! Merry Christmas! I did my usual wake-up-before-everyone-but-be-too-tired-to-wake-them-up-so-I-fell-asleep-by-the-tree spiel. I mostly received clothes. Some sweaters, a pair of leggings, a floral button-down, tights, A LONG SLEEVE STRIPED SHIRT (I've wanted one since October!), the previously mentioned vest,a couple pairs of shoes, and then some jewlery. I've gained this horrible compulsive shopping habit and I went shopping the day AFTER Christmas and I got a couple t-shirts and these BDG high-waisted jeans that I've been lusting after. I also bought some more jewlery and this sorta mint green nail polish from Urban Outfitters. I'm so happy with my purchases :)
I haven't been wearing anything notably lately, (except for today, but I have no pictures) BUT, I did play dress-up last night :) I found this lovely floral fabric in my mom's closet. It was actually intended to be my curtains way back like, 10 years ago, but it never happened.
Anyway....

Vintage dress, F21 Sweater/necklace/rings, old tights/ studded belt, AA braided belt, Rampage shoes.
I decided to have a little fun, haha. I haven't taken indoor pictures in a while, so I dusted off my work light and set up my tripod. I need to work on positioning the lights, but more so, it's that I need a surface tall enough to it on. And I need to be using 3 and not one, but I have no clue where my other two are. I especially miss my kicker :(
SO, that was a little preview of a couple of my Christmas items. Hope your holiday season went well <3
I probably won't post again before the new year, but I wish a really great one for everybody! May 2010 bring about all the things you desire :)

like, "Oh my God, I like it. Oh, oh God I like it."
So how about this posted without my permission. Hmm.
So, I'm WAY in a Dance Gavin Dance mood. If you couldn't tell my all my recent titles.
I'm so proud of myself, I ate celery today. It's been WAAAY too long. But then I ruined it with white chocolate-covered pretzels. I was hungry! It was an emergency, haha.
Rhode Island School of Design came by today :D The speaker was pretty interested in my stuff, but like the others, he said to further develop my ideas. They're definitely still one of my top schools. I need to take a visit to see if it's the place for me though. I love that it's super close to New York, but MICA is, too. It's a hard choice.
Today's outfit was mainly for warmth in the chilly weather. I'm not used to below 80 in Miami..so I go all out with long sleeves and tights, haha.

F21 Striped shirt/belt/pearl necklace, Target skirt, UO tights, Steve Madden Mary Jane pumps (that you can't see!)
Short post :) Gotta get on some artwork. I've been working on this little project, I'll show you a sample soooon!

black friday
A poem for you guys:
By: Estallidos (Kelsey Rakes) @ deviantART.
Hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving! Here's a poem that I love written by the amazing Kelsey. Thought the theme fit, haha.
I'm excited for Black Friday. However, I'm so angry that people have been lined up since Wednesday night for the sales. They totally skipped Thanksgiving! It's a holiday that's meant to bring people together, and I know what the moment that doors open, everyone's going to be snatching and grabbing and talking crap and throwing punches. How unfortunate :(
I'm hoping I can do all my shopping online, and that I don't have to enter a store...but there's these pair of shoes calling me at Aldo. Well, three. I'm not sure which ones yet, but I'll let you know when I know :D
My field trip Wednesday was pretty chill. I didn't really take any worthwhile pictures because they took all bags when we entered. I figured that they would, but I thought I'd try, haha. A few of the pieces caught my eye. The exhibit was called "The Missing Peace" and it was all about the Dalai Lama.

Both of these works are currently showing at the FIU Frost Museum.
You can learn more about the exhibit here.
It was a really cool field trip. Next week, I'm hoping to go to Art Basel! I'm super excited. If I can't go, I'm leaving early and going with friends or something, lol.
Hope you guys have a great day! I'm hoping to ditch these late night posts, lol.
Love you,
Melanie
the day before thanksgiving we stop at a red light and i aimlessly stare out the window, trying to envision a hypothetical car crash that would be strong enough to rip a limb from someone's body.
"what are you thinking about?" you ask me, and i can tell that you want me to say something sweet and poetic, maybe about the slope of your shoulders or the shadows that are cast by your eyelashes.
i don't want you to know that i'm imagining trying to hug you with one arm, so instead i bury my face in your shoulder and mumble, "cars."
---
my family sits uncomfortably around the dining room table after finishing the meal, staring at each other.
"why don't we each say what we're thankful for?" my sister offers, breaking the silence.
"that's a great idea. kelsey, would you like to go first?" my mother asks.
they all turn to look at me, and for the first time ever i find myself speechless.
---
i make you a thanksgiving card on orange construction paper, carefully tracing my left hand with a brown marker to make a turkey.
i cover it with glitter and halloween stickers and hope it might be enough.
but it isn't.
---
black friday is cold and ominous.
we're braked at another stoplight, and i notice your eyes are closed, and that the shadows cast by your eyelashes really are deserving of something sweet and poetic.
"i got the small end of the wishbone," you tell me conversationally.
"oh?" i ask. "what were you wishing for?"
"you," you say quietly, and the light turns green.
